  54. What TOPS is all About:
  55.    The name "TOPS" stands for "Text Output Paper Saver". TOPS is a
  56.    new Windows print utility that saves paper when printing text
  57.    files. TOPS can fit from one to 256 pages to one sheet of paper.

  59. Who is this "ETS" company, anyway:
  60.    ETS has been manufacturing and selling software for IBM compat-
  61.    able computers since 1990. TOPS is the first Windows program the
  62.    company has released. ETS has been very successful with many of
  63.    it's popular programs for DOS; such as:
  64.      Laser Printer Envelope - DOS/VGA Envelope Maker for Lasers
  65.      Ascii Print Pro - the prior DOS/VGA version of TOPS
  66.      Casey - DOS/VGA Calenders the Easy Way
  67.      Skip - DOS/VGA Label Maker
  68.      Pirada I,II,III - DOS/EGA The Ancient Games of Pirada
  69.    All of these programs are available on CompuServe, AOL and hun-
  70.    dreds of hobby bulletin boards everywhere. Pirada has had over
  71.    20,000 downloads from America Online alone, making it one of the
  72.    most downloaded files of all time on AOL!

  74. What is Needed to use TOPS:
  75.    TOPS must have Windows 3.1 or newer in order to run. TOPS will
  76.    run under Windows95. We expect to have a Windows95 version at
  77.    some point in the future.
  78.    NOTE: TOPS will not run under Windows 3.0.

  80. What TYPES of FILES TOPS can Print:
  81.    TOPS can print any ASCII TEXT file. For the past few years, many
  82.    people simply call this file format "TEXT" or "MS-DOS TEXT".
  83.    Some people use TOPS for Printing:
  84.     - Long Reports.
  85.     - Spreadsheets.
  86.     - Draft Copies of Books.
  87.     - Loan Amortization Schedules.
  88.     - Program Source Code.
  89.     - Names and Addresses.
  90.     - Engineering Data.
  91.     - Raw Textual Data.
  92.     - Extra-Wide text. TOPS supports LANDSCAPE or "Wide" style.
  93.     NOTE: Word Processing Programs are not simply "TEXT EDITORS",
  94.           and you will need to convert any files created by these
  95.           programs into TEXT or MS-DOS TEXT format before using
  96.           TOPS to print these files.

  105.    ETS, the makers of TOPS, run a live Customer Support service.

  108.    City, Utah, and the hours are Mountain Standard Time (MST). Our

  110.    need to make the most out of using TOPS.

  112. How to Use TOPS Built-In HELP:
  113.    It is common for Windows programs to have a "HELP" item in the
  114.    Main Menu, and TOPS is no exception. If you need to access TOPS
  115.    Help, simply click on the "Help" menu item. All of the Dialogs
  116.    in TOPS have "Help" buttons which are called "Context Sensitive
  117.    Help". By pressing any of these special Help buttons, TOPS will
  118.    open up it's built-in Help and go directly to the specific topic
  119.    in the Help that relates to the options you are choosing.

  121.    Many software manufacturers have recently switched to Online
  122.    Help for their programs. This helps keep costs down for you,
  123.    the user. Manuals are expensive to design and produce, and when
  124.    new versions of the software are released, the stock of older
  125.    manuals become "landfill". By using Online Help, your program is
  126.    always updated with the latest Help information -- assuring you
  127.    of TOP performance that keeps up with the newest technology.

  129. Common Customer Support Questions:
  130.    Q: TOPS gives me an error message: "This file contains binary
  131.       characters". What does this mean?
  132.    A: TOPS can only handle ASCII TEXT files, and ASCII TEXT files
  133.       should not contain binary characters. TOPS will simply ignore
  134.       any binary characters encountered in a file.
  135.       One reason for this is that you are trying to load a complex
  136.       document, such as a Word Processing document. You will have
  137.       to first convert these documents to DOS TEXT format before
  138.       using TOPS to shrink Word Processing files.
  139.    Q: Can I import the filename or date into the header line?
  140.    A: Yes. Select "Options", "Header and Footer". Within the Header
  141.       line options you will see checkboxes for PATH, FILE SIZE,
  142.       TIME and DATE. PATH will import the complete pathname to the
  143.       file into the header. Checking SIZE, TIME or DATE without
  144.       checking PATH will cause TOPS to place only the simple DOS
  145.       filename into the header line.

  151.    Q: How can I stop the TOPS EXAMPLE file appearing each time I
  152.       start up the program?
  153.    A: Go to "Options", "Misc Setups" and un-check the box in the
  154.       lower left marked "Show Example on Startup".

  156.    Q: How can I stop the TOPS Logo box from appearing each time I
  157.       start the program?
  158.    A: Go to "Options", "Misc Setups" and un-check the box in the
  159.       lower left marked "Show Logo on Startup".

  161.    Q: Some lines in my file are much wider than others, and I want
  162.       to clip them shorter in order to get a larger font. How do I
  163.       clip long lines? (such as "C" and Pascal source code)
  164.    A: Go to "Options", "Misc Setups". In the "Line Styles" box,
  165.       check the "Clip Long Lines at" button, then enter a number
  166.       into the text entry box to it's right. You will typically
  167.       enter a number between 72 and 80.

  169.    Q: My font is way too large. How do I make it smaller?
  170.    A: Go to "Options", "Font" and choose a smaller point size.
  171.       Sometimes when you are printing 1 page per sheet, the font
  172.       will be too large. This method will reduce the font size.

  174.    Q: My font is way too small. How do I make it larger?
  175.    A: Go to the "Options", "Misc Setups" dialog and change the
  176.       "Clip Long Lines" setting to a smaller number.
  177.       Decreasing the number of lines per page will also cause TOPS
  178.       to create a larger font.

  180.    Q: How can I "trick" my Word Processing software into creating
  181.       an ASCII TEXT file?
  182.    A: From Print Manager in Windows, add a new printer "GENERIC/
  183.       TEXT ONLY". Press the "CONNECT" button and select "FILE:"
  184.       instead of "LPT1:". This will create an print driver which
  185.       simulates the "Old Days" back when printers couldn't handle
  186.       downloaded fonts and graphics.
  187.       Next, go back to your Word Processing application, and select
  188.       the GENERIC/TEXT PRINTER. When you print your document, Win-
  189.       dows will prompt you for a filename to store the text output.
  190.       The text file you create using this "print to file" should
  191.       then be compatible with TOPS.

  201.    TOPS comes in two flavors:
  202.  
  203.     1 - DEMO verson: Contains all features, but has one additional
  204.         feature that the REGISTERED version does not have -- the
  205.         TOPS logo prints on the lower right corner of your sheet of
  206.         paper, which is an advertisment to purchase TOPS.
  207.  
  208.     2 - REGISTERED version: Contains all features, except the TOPS
  209.         logo is not printed on each sheet of paper.
  210.         The only way to obtain a REGISTERED version of TOPS is to
  211.         purchase it from ETS Inc.

  213.    ONLINE UPGRADES:
  214.     ETS Inc. maintains a 24/hr 2-line BBS in Salt Lake City for
  215.     customers to obtain free product upgrades and demos. The latest
  216.     versions of all ETS products are always available on this BBS.
  217.     All registered customers receive a diskette with a special
  218.     serial number written on it. This serial number allows any user
  219.     to download the latest version of TOPS free of charge from the
  220.     ETS BBS.

  222.    HOW TO DOWNLOAD YOUR FREE TOPS REGISTERED UPGRADE:
  223.     1 - Call our BBS in Salt Lake City.

  226.     2 - Log in to the BBS, You will be asked for your name, city
  227.         and phone number. When you are asked for a password, make
  228.         up a secret word that only you will remember, then remember
  229.         the word you made up.
  230.         IMPORTANT: Do NOT enter your diskette serial number for
  231.         the password. These are two totally different things!
  232.     3 - When you get to the "Main Menu" in the BBS:
  233.         type-->"DOOR 1" (don't type the Quote marks)
  234.         press Enter.
  235.     4 - Select "TOPS" from the list of programs.
  236.     5 - Now enter the serial number from your TOPS diskette.
  237.     6 - The BBS will give you a special password to download
  238.         the latest registered version of TOPS.
  239.     7 - Press Enter to return to the Main Menu.
  240.     8 - Type-->"D TOPS.ZIP" (don't type the Quote marks)
  241.     9 - Enter the download password that you received from step 6.
  242.    10 - Press your Enter key a couple of times to begin downloading
  243.         the new file to your computer.
  244.    11 - When the download is finished, you will have a file on your
  245.         hard drive named "TOPS.ZIP" which contains the new version.
  246.         simply un-zip this file into your TOPS directory.
